Scientists from the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that
global warming led to about 160 000 deaths each year. This figure
would be doubled by the year 2020. The warmer temperature lead to
more droughts, floods and extreme weather, that may eventually result
in the spread of malnutrition, diarrhea and malaria. The most vulnerable
group would be the children in the developing countries.
How can we stop the increase in global temperature?
Harbour or river?
The Central Reclamation Phase III project is underway. The new land
will be used for building a Central-Wan Chai Bypass to ease the
traffic congestion in the area. A waterfront path will also be built
to give a better urban environment. However, green groups and some
citizens oppose the reclamation project. They claim that the mud
from the sea bed is likely to contain heavy metals and other organic
contaminants. The removal and dumping of the mud would release the
toxic substances to the sea and pollute the environment. Do you
think the government should continue the reclamation project?
